The Soviet Guards Badge, awarded to members after 10 events

About the 13th Guards Living History Group

We are based in the UK, with members all across the country. The aim of our unit within Za Oberonya, (for Defence) is to show this aspect of the war in Europe, one less well described in the West, although we support the activities of groups in the and organisations in the UK and are proud to be members of Twinwoods Airfield Reenactment Association (TARA).

2 of our guards infantry armed with PPSH-41 Machine guns, ready to throw off the fascist invaders of the Soviet Motherland!

Our group has been successfully portraying both the Soviet army and her Socialist allies and we have around 100 years of living history experience between us! But of course, we are still learning and welcome any advice or help, no matter how small you think it is!

We have achieved much since forming, quickly builiding a solid reputation among our peers and event organisers for being good at what we do. Za Oberonya, the 1st Bulgarian Infantry Division and the 13th Guards are part of a non-political group, dedicated simply to the accurate portrayal of all branches of the Soviet and Bulgarian Communist forces of WWII. Our events are developed in advance, so everybody has the correct equipment and uniform. These events can include the portrayal of Marines, Razvedchiki, (special forces) Rifles and Infantry, combat engineers, Partisans and so on.

The net result of this is a good interesting display. It sustains enthusiasm amongst our own members, gives event organisers scope to include elements relevant to the theme of their event and gives the viewing public the oppertunity to view a wide spectrum of the Soviet armed forces.(not to mention our large collection of uniforms and equipment!)
Our focus is on the everyday life of the men and women (all roles are open equally to men and women) embroiled in this conflict. The way they ate and survived, their hopes and fears. Through high quality living history displays, we aim to give a taste of what life was like for ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.

If you have an interest in this fascinating part of history and would like to learn more, or join in our activities, you would be welcomed. If you contact us, you will find us a friendly and helpful group. We take our hobby seriously, but we enjoy what we do and the unit has a very active social life.
